From Krakow to Eger, via Slovakia

Today we leave Poland. I have to say I have fallen for this country which has delighted and inspired me in so many ways. From the gorgeous lake district in the north to it's big cities; from it's complex history to its proud desire for a better future - it has captivated me more than I imagined it would. And we haven't quite got to the mountainous region yet - that's on today's itinerary. Our wonderful guide Fil is partly to thank for this penchant for the place; although he's from Latvia, he has lived in Krakow for many years (his wife is Polish) and I've learnt so much from him. We all have. Dziekuje, Fil (thank you, in Polish - pronounced "jekoya"). We each take a bulging picnic lunch bag from the hotel (two large filled baguettes, plus much more besides!) and set off on our way to Eger in Hungary, via Slovakia. Preparing to head to Russia and beyond

I'm a Tour Leader with Maher Escorted Tours and am leading the Russia/Baltic/Danube trip this year, 2019. I'm busy preparing so that my group of 18 travellers from throughout NZ have the very best time on this fabulous trip-of-a-lifetime. We leave on Wednesday 17th July (on countdown!) and return on Saturday 17th August. We will visit 11 countries in 32 days - Singapore, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Germany and Czech Republic - by plane, train, coach and river boat. I have visited six of these countries before, but not for some years. The rest, well it goes without saying I am really looking forward to experiencing them.  We'll enjoy superb hotels, great food, unique experiences, and wonderful camaraderie. There will be many adventures along the way, with a blend of guided sightseeing and free time that enables personal exploration of the fabulous destinations we'll be visiting. Into Poland - Magical Moments on Polish Lakes

Having farewelled our lovely Baltic States guide Marianna and driver Viktor last night, we meet our new guide Fil and driver Mariusz. Fil is originally from Latvia and now lives in Krakow. He is young, energetic, on the ball and his English is perfect. He also speaks Latvian, Russian and Polish. I have a feeling we will be in excellent hands for our Polish sojourn.  We leave Vilnius and drive south, the lush green countryside stretching on either side of the straight roads, the occasional roundabout transitioning traffic smoothly at the junctions. After a comfort stop - “coffee in, coffee out” Fil calls it - at the old Lithuanian/Polish border, which is a collection of derelict buildings, relics from the communist days, we swoop into Poland in our big shiny blue bus.  We pass neat and tidy houses and miles of green fields.  There is every tone of green imaginable.  “Pol” means fields ...
